The Salmonella outbreak in the west adds another county in Texas to its list of confirmed salmonella poisoning from tomatoes. Even though the FDA declares that Texas and New Mexico grown tomatoes is not the source of the illnesses. State health department sources still urge people to limit raw tomato consumption to Cherry tomatoes and Grape tomato varieties. The CDC has reported 56 Salmonella cases in Texas and 55 in New Mexico.
The outbreak is even effecting MacDonald’s who says it has stopped serving sliced tomatoes in all of its sandwiches in the United States because of the salmonella fears. Grocery store chains like Wal-Mart will stop selling some types of tomatoes, while the source of the outbreak is still under investigation.
The salmonella outbreaks have spread to 16 states. But the rumors of the salmonella outbreak have affected tomato sells across the entire country.
Salmonella poisoning symptoms generally appear within 12 to 72 hours and include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
More than 160 people have reported cases of getting sick from salmonella food poisoning in 16 states from Californai to Virginia.
Retailers from Wal-Mart and Winn Dixie have voluntarily removed tomatoes from their stores.
The source of the salmonella poisoning from tomatoes is still under investigation.
